As part of the European Union, Germany holds to a number of requirements for Americans wishing to enter the country. Be sure to check with the U.S. Embassy if you have any concerns.
Passport
You must have a valid United States passport. To obtain a passport, fill out an application and take it along with two passport-sized photos (2 by 2 inches) to your local post office. It will take up to eight weeks to get a passport, so plan accordingly.
Visa
If you plan on staying in Germany for more than 90 days, you must obtain a visa. A visa is valid for up to six months and can be applied for in the United States or Germany.
Copies
Whenever traveling, you should always carry copies of important documents in case the originals are lost or stolen. Be sure to take copies of identification cards, passport, credit cards and birth certificates to Germany with you.
Flight
In order to be let into Germany, you need to have a visa or proof of a return flight. You will be asked at customs upon arrival for this information.
Proof
If you are not returning from Germany or you are staying for an extended period of time, along with a visa you will need proof of employment, schooling or family in the country. This will also be required at customs upon arrival.
