Ride the scenic snowmobile trails in northern Wisconsin this winter.
There are over 25,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails throughout the state of Wisconsin that welcome an average of 200,000 registered snowmobile enthusiasts each season. Some of the most scenic trails are located in northern Wisconsin where the snowfall is generally higher and the snowmobile season is longer as a result. A trail pass issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is required to ride any Wisconsin trail. Riders may also consider taking a snowmobile safety course prior to hitting the trails.
Oneida County Snowmobile Trails
Oneida county is located near Wisconsin's border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) and within the Nicolet National Forest. The snowmobile trail system is one of the longest in the state with over 1,000 miles of interconnected trails that wind throughout the county and connect with the systems of neighboring counties as well as the UP. Oneida county's trails cross lakes and open fields and cut through national forest and other wooded areas. Snowmobile tourism is important to the county economy and many of the local towns offer food and lodging to snowmobile enthusiasts. Start with some coffee and a hot breakfast at a local diner and end a day on the trails with a visit to a lakeside bar and a fish fry dinner. The trails are maintained jointly by volunteers from the county's snowmobile clubs who groom trails, negotiate with landowners for access and mark trails with necessary signage. All riders in Oneida County are asked to respect the posted speed limits and stay on designated trails.

Price County Snowmobile Trails
Price county is adjacent to Oneida county in northern Wisconsin but has the advantage of being less crowded during the snowmobile season so the trail system is generally less congested. The Price county trail system is a combination of club, country and federally maintained trails, is over 1,600 miles long and includes approximately 1,300 glacial freshwater lakes and 233,000 acres of public and national forest. In addition to less crowded trails, Price county offers plenty of pit stops and lodging along its system that cater to snowmobilers. Several of the county's trails like the six-mile long Merlin Coher Memorial Trail and the four-mile Doc Frye Memorial Trail cut through wooded areas with a mix of tall hardwoods and conifers. Other trails such as Trail 19 are in the deep woods. The length of the Price county trail system allows snowmobile enthusiasts to ride for several days without repeating a trail or loop.
