When the Academy Awards come around, everyone starts thinking about movies and Hollywood. It is an ideal time to go all out and throw a red carpet party and invite everyone over to watch the show. Does this Spark an idea?
Choose a Theme
Either go general Hollywood, or choose a specific theme, such as Black and White movies, Glamorous, Eighties Hollywood or Funny Hollywood. Frame and hang up framed stills from movies representing your theme, such as Charlie Chaplin for Black and White movies. Invite guests to dress in costume for the theme, or when guests arrive, pin the name of a movie star onto their back and let people try to guess who they are by asking other people questions about their identity. This game can be a lot of fun and a great icebreaker. Before the awards start, play soundtracks from movies appropriate to your theme for background music.
Decorations
Choose decorations that speak to the excitement and glamour of the Oscars. Use lots of gold and sparkle, but don't spend a lot of money. If you have a digital picture frame, capture stills of Academy Award winning movies and create a slideshow. Take a trip to the dollar store or party supply store and stock up on plastic champagne glasses, gold garlands, glitter and ribbon. Fill glass vases with plastic gems or glitter coated tree branches. Put rhinestone stickers on lengths of ribbon to tie around the vases. Scatter metallic confetti on the tablecloths and use party favor Oscar statues as centerpieces. Arrange sections of old film reel around the statue.
Food and Drink
Finger food is best, especially for a party that will meander on for hours as the Oscars go on. Put together antipasto trays with salami, cheese bites, marinated mushrooms, melon and olives. Serve trays of fruit chunks, finger sandwiches, fried ravioli, or your favorite small hors d'oeuvres. Try to keep foods simple and bite size. Have lots of frilly toothpicks on hand. Since people will probably be in costume or dressed up, avoid messy items, such as dips, Cheetos and chicken wings. For drinks, champagne is the first thing that comes to mind, and a little bit is OK. Plan to have other delicious drinks, such as Shirley Temple's, sparkling cider or ginger ale. Make punch using fruit juice, soda, and fruit slices. Serve in champagne glasses and garnish with maraschino cherries.
