The best place to live depends on your needs and preferences.
Hawaii is one of the most desirable places to live in the United States with lush forests, exotic beaches, world class surfing and tropical weather. Honolulu offers more places to live than any other city in the state. When deciding the best place to live, compare your needs and preferences to what Honolulu's distinct neighborhoods can offer you.
Waikiki
Waikiki
Waikiki is one of the most recognizable places in Hawaii and one of the best places to live in Honolulu. Neighborhoods in this area are reminiscent of prosperous neighborhoods in Los Angeles. The beaches are pristine and well manicured, the clubs are exclusive and open until 3 a.m. and the parties last all night. While there is always something to do in Waikiki, there are also many spots in which to do absolutely nothing but enjoy the peaceful shoreline and the famous Hawaiian sunsets.
Waikiki is about as exclusive as you can get, with the prices to match, whether you plan to rent or buy.
Diamond Head
Diamond Head
Diamond Head was named by British sailors in the 1800s who mistook the sparkles of calcite crystal for diamonds in the soil. Today, Diamond Head has blossomed into one of the premier living spots for Honolulu's rich and powerful. Many homes here offer beachfront views and cost more than $1 million. Nearby is the distinctive Diamond Head Crater, a tall volcanic cone. Segments of the popular television show "Lost" were filmed in Diamond Head.
Hawaii Kai
Hawaii Kai
Hawaii Kai is a relatively new hot spot in Honolulu. This still largely residential area is less frequented by tourists, although it offers affordable accommodations and a number of bed-and-breakfast inns. Located in southeastern Oahu and within both the city and county of Honolulu, Hawaii Kai was the location of many "Kuapa," or ancient fish ponds. Today it is home to many small neighborhoods, which offer a quieter, more suburban experience of Hawaii. Although some Hawaii Kai properties list for as much as $80 million, in 2010 you could still find a 3-bedroom home within walking distance to the ocean, starting at about $500,000.
