Even a big, fancy luau in Hawaii calls for casual clothes. So, so get out your sandals and sundresses, shorts and Hawaiian shirts, and be comfortable. Hula outfits are not only acceptable; they're expected. If you like that look, pile on the leis and get ready to dance. Does this Spark an idea?
Women's Outfits
Women can wear the hula version of a luau outfit, or choose a Hawaiian dress with sandals or flip-flops. For a hula-dancer look, choose a natural grass skirt or a plastic or tissue-paper version with a coconut bra. Or wear a floral bikini, tie a beach wrap or pareo over the bottom and add a wide lei at the waistline. Floral anklets (real or artificial) complete the look.
Whichever outfit you wear, tuck a flower in your hair. Placing the flower behind your left ear means you're married or otherwise "taken," and behind your right ear means you're single or "available."
Men's Outfits
Men can wear a pair of shorts, a Hawaiian-print shirt and sandals or flip-flops. Or dress as a bare-chested male hula dancer in a pair of white slacks or hibiscus-print shorts and sandals. Hang a lei around your neck and place a small flower behind one ear. For males, this has no "availability" significance; it's just there for the scent.
Children's Outfits
Dress little boys in matching Hawaiian-print shirts and shorts, and little girls in tropical flower-print dresses, or a ruffled top and matching shorts with sandals. Clip a hibiscus-flower barrette behind a little girl's right ear. Dress a baby in a tiny girl's Hawaiian-print dress or boy's cabana set. Add a ruffled headband with a flower for a girl. Make a diaper cover with a flower-print bandanna folded into a triangle. Gather the points at the center front and secure them with a diaper pin.
