Mexican & Latino Halloween Costumes For Kids

Mexican cowgirls

With bright colors, comfortable fabrics and patterns that reflect both their Spanish and Native American heritage, Mexico offers a variety of costume ideas. Explore your local thrift store and your own closet for items that can be jazzed up with trim, lace and hats from the costume shop and fabric store.

Girl's Everyday cotume

You need a mid-calf circle skirt in a bright color, stripes or white with embroidery. If you have a Huipil blouse, great, otherwise wear a peasant blouse or any white or light-colored blouse with a scooped neck line and short sleeves. Add a shawl and sandals or slippers.

Boy's Everyday Costume

Start with a light-colored trousers and a light-colored button-down shirt. Make a serape out of a small blanket or throw. A throw with bright stripes and fringe would be ideal. Fold it into thirds or cut to size and drape it over the shoulder or cut a hole for your head and wear like a poncho. Wear a sombrero or straw cowboy hat and boots or sandals.

Dressy Boy's Costume

Trim a black pair of pants with gold braid. Run the trim up the side of one leg across the small of the back and down the other leg. Wear a short black jacket or black vest with the same trim over a button down shirt. Top with a fringed gaucho hat.

Girl's Dressy Costume

Wear a long, circle skirt in a solid color and a dressy matching blouse with elbow-length sleeves. You may also look for a long old fashion dress. Make a lace or velvet over skirt that is open in the front Add lace to the sleeve. Wear slippers and a black lace shawl. Cover a craft store crown with black lace to make a mantilla.

Zorro

Wear an all-black cowboy suit with an untrimmed gaucho hat and a short black cape. Get a sword at the costume shop.
