Scavenger Hunt Ideas For The Mountains

A pine cone could be on a mountain scavenger hunt list.

Scavenger hunts in the mountains can be fun and challenging, although there should always be designated paths and guides if necessary. Mountainous scavenger hunts can also be a more interactive and interesting way to teach about nature and wildlife.

Wildlife

Mountain ranges are home to a variety of animals. Some, like cougars and bears, are not those you’d like to find. However, birds, insects and small mammals, like squirrels, can be found on rocks and in trees along the mountain trails, making them perfect for scavenger hunts. While players shouldn’t have to catch these critters, having digital photos as proof they’ve been spotted will work.

Flowers

Along with wildlife, mountains are also home to a variety of plants, some that sprout beautiful flowers. Finding the correct flower on the scavenger hunt list will be part of the challenge. Don't have players pick the flowers, but have them take photos of the flowers as proof they were found.

Natural Water

Streams, rivers, lakes or waterfalls may be a part of a mountain range’s ecosystem. Scavenger hunt participants can take digital images of the water or extra points can be given to teams who take pictures of themselves in the water.

Pine Cones and More

There may be different types of pine cones, nuts or pods from the bushes and trees on the mountains. Items that have fallen off the plants can be collected by scavenger hunters and brought back.

Rock Formation

There may be a special rock formation on the mountain that scavenger hunters can find and photograph as proof. Amah Rock, on a small mountain in Hong Kong, China, for example, is shaped like a woman with a baby on her back.
