Senior Citizens Activities In Phoenix Az

Seniors can take in beautiful scenery in Phoenix, AZ.

Many senior citizens choose Phoenix, Arizona, as their retirement home because of its temperate weather and because of the numerous activities for their age group, including an abundance of senior centers, outdoor activities such as golf and hiking and the many museums and cultural events in the Phoenix metro area.

Senior Centers

Phoenix's Human Services Department operates 15 senior centers, which those age 60 or older and adults with disabilities can access for nutrition programs, group meals, educational events, advocacy programs and fall prevention. Transportation for seniors in Phoenix is available via the Reserve-A-Ride program, which provides wheelchair accessible, door-to-door transportation for those age 60 and over to and from senior centers, medical appointments, social service agencies and shopping. Seniors can also enjoy fellowship and numerous activities including dances, computer classes, field trips, painting lessons, bingo and card games, among other events at the senior centers in Phoenix. Each senior center has a calendar of monthly events and menus.

Outdoor Activities

The year-round sunny climate that Phoenix has to offer is conducive to many outdoor activities for senior citizens, including walking, biking and hiking. More than 16,000 acres of desert lakes surround the Phoenix-metro area, including the Roosevelt, Apache, Canyon, Saguaro, Bartlett and Horseshoe reservoirs, and Lake Pleasant, where seniors enjoy swimming, fishing and the scenery. The greater Phoenix area also offers over 20 golf course options for senior citizens who want to enjoy a light-impact sport with a view of majestic mountain ranges in three directions.

Culture and the Arts

For senior citizens who enjoy cultural events, from 6 to 10 p.m. on the first Friday of each month, they can take a free self-guided tour of downtown Phoenix galleries, studios and art spaces. "First Friday," as it is known, is organized by Artlink, a nonprofit organization formed to promote the arts and the development of a strong and vital downtown Phoenix arts community.
