Tavern Girl Halloween Costume Accessory Ideas

Accessories can create a one-of-a-kind Halloween costume.

Halloween costume parties pose a quandary for adults looking for a memorable costume that will not be identical to someone else's. When it comes to uniqueness, it's all in the details. Accessories can set a common costume choice apart from the rest. Store-bought tavern girl costumes generally include a blouse and lace-up jumper dress, and this costume provides ample room to accessorize.

Leg Wear

Leg wear is an accessory that can serve two functions for a tavern girl costume--adding sex appeal and keeping your legs warm on a late October night. Knee-high white stockings complement any tavern girl costume. The addition of garters in a color that matches the dress can result in a fully coordinated look. Depending on the costume look you are attempting, fishnet leggings can be another option. You can find these items in a costume shop or local department store.

Undergarments

Tavern girl dresses are usually very short, just passing the mid-thigh. A lace, tulle or mesh petticoat underneath the skirt will add volume so the skirt puffs out instead of hanging flat against your legs. Choose a petticoat that matches a dominant color in your dress. Since the skirt is so short, you may want to wear boy-cut underwear to protect your modesty. Choose a ruffled boy short that matches your petticoat, or, if you expect your bottom to be seen, choose a boy short with a flirty print of beer mugs or liquor bottles to complement the costume theme. Petticoats and boy shorts are available in department stores, but a costume shop will generally have a wider selection.

Jewelery

The low-cut blouse and short sleeves of a tavern girl costume leaves space for jewelery accessories. A ribbon choker necklace and matching bracelet are subtle and can be color-coordinated with the costume. Purchase ribbon and Velcro from a fabric or craft store to make your own ribbon bracelet and choker. Charm necklaces and bracelets are other options. Look for charms that symbolize the tavern scene, such as beer mugs or martini glasses. A department or jewelery accessory store will have bracelets and charms to choose from.

Beer Accessories

A tavern girl's main function is to serve libations, so a costume would not be complete without a beer-themed accessory. Costume retailers sell fabric purses designed to look like beer mugs. These are multifunctional, as you also can use the as a purse to carry personal items. Instead of a purse, an actual beer mug or stein can add an authentic element to your costume. Search thrift stores or restaurant supply stores for mugs and steins. A lidded stein can work on its own, but a glass beer mug needs to look full to complete the costume. Spray the inside of the mug with yellow or gold paint. Cut a 1/2-inch thick circle of white craft foam with a diameter the same size as the inside of the mug. Use glue around the edge of the circle to glue it in place inside the mug. From all angles, it will appear you are holding a foamy glass of beer.
