Theme Ideas for a School Dance

School dances are the biggest social events of teenager 's lives. Whether it's prom, homecoming or just a dance to gather students for a good time; school dances are filled with friends, food, dancing and entertainment. Planning a school dance takes a considerable amount of planning and preparation and every detail must be right to create an experience students will remember forever. Does this Spark an idea?

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a time for celebration and elaborate décor. Decorate the party area with deep purples, greens and gold. Give students party beads and masks to complete the theme.

Fiesta

Turn your high school gym into a fiesta celebration, equipped with piñatas, bright décor, maracas and sombreros. Serve Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos, burritos and bean dip. Serve students frozen non-alcoholic drinks.

Hollywood

Roll out the red carpet and hire photographers to stand on the sideline and photograph students as they arrive at the party. Set up a step and repeat wall on the red carpet so students can pose for pictures and feel like stars. Ask students to dress like their favorite Hollywood celebrity. Have food served cocktail style by teachers playing the part of waiters. Send students home with a gift bag filled with movie-inspired items like popcorn and movie theater gift cards.

Winter Wonderland

Create an atmosphere filled with white lights, garland and candles. Hang paper snowflakes at the venue and decorate the tables with white rose petals, silver confetti or bowls with floating white candles inside them. For an extra effect, use a snow machine to give students the illusion of snowfall.

Casino

Make students think they stepped into a Las Vegas casino by decorating your school dance venue with dim lighting and white lights hanging from the ceiling. Use red, black and green decorations to help complete the theme. Set up tables where students can play casino-themed games like blackjack, poker or roulette, Have teachers dress up as dealers and man the game tables. Provide students with cocktail-style service, rather than a seated meal or buffet.

Luau

Consider hosting a school dance at the beach, complete with Hawaiian music, grass skirts and leis. Serve foods like roasted pig, tropical fruit, cold salads and grilled chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers and frozen fruit drinks.

70s Disco

Take students back to the days of disco as they enter a room filled with bright colors like red, yellow, orange and green. Hang a large mirrored disco ball in the middle of the venue. Decorate the room with vinyl records. Play popular 70s music to get students on the dance floor. Ask students to put together their best disco outfit for the event including go-go boots, big hair and bell bottoms.
