Types Of Food To Have At A Pig Roast

Many foods go well with roast pig.

It takes a lot of time to roast a pig. Whether you're roasting on a spit or in a pit, many hours will pass before the pig is done. Chances are, you're also having the pig roast during warm weather in a barbecue setting. Since the pig should remain the star of the show and since it is warm weather, go for foods that are not heavy and will not overpower the pig. Does this Spark an idea?

Appetizers

Place a shrimp cocktail on a serving table. Keep the shrimp cocktail cool by placing it on a platter and putting the platter on top of ice. Buffalo wings are another appetizer you can serve. Do not spend too much time on appetizers. When the pig is done, there will be plenty of food for everyone. So, offer a tray of assorted vegetables and ranch dressing for your guests.

Salads

A crisp, leafy salad with a choice of salad dressings for your guests will be a good way to start the meal. Prepare a Caesar salad; or, a cucumber salad with a vinegar-based or creamy sauce also goes well with roasted pig. Cherry tomatoes that have been halved can be paired with cubes of mozzarella cheese. Toss this mixture with a pesto sauce and serve it cold.

Side Dishes

Vegetables are a healthy and light addition to your pig roast. Try grilled asparagus and mushrooms. Use spices on the vegetables that will complement the spices you used on the pig. Place the vegetables in tin foil and grill them over medium heat. For heavier side dishes that are still appropriate for a warm-weather barbecue, try macaroni and cheese or a potato salad. Baked beans are also a good accompaniment.

Desserts

Fruits are the main dessert ingredient to use. Make strawberry shortcake, or make a strawberry-and-red-wine sorbet. Ice cream is another good option. Alternatively, make root beer floats, or just set out the ingredients to make the floats. Your guests can then make the floats themselves.
