Scavenger Hunt Ideas for Children's Parties
Regardless of the season, plan a scavenger hunt for your child's next party that will keep him and his friends entertained for hours. Choose a theme for the hunt and then give each of the children a list containing the items they need to find. Send them off to search for the objects and offer prizes that match the scavenger hunt's theme. Does this Spark an idea?
Nature
When the weather is nice, host a scavenger hunt outside. Use a nature theme when creating the list of objects the children need to find. Have them search for items such as pine cones, rocks, different kinds of tree bark or leaves. Offer small prizes that can be played outside, such as Frisbees, bouncy balls or bubbles.
Holiday Theme
Host a holiday-themed scavenger hunt for Christmas, Halloween or Easter. During the Christmas season, hide ornaments, candy canes or miniature toys. For a Halloween hunt, have the kids search for gruesome body parts like bloody fingers, brains or eyeballs. Plan a traditional Easter egg scavenger hunt and add a few additional items like miniature toy bunnies, chocolate candy and change inside plastic eggs. Allow the children to keep the "finds" as their prizes.
Household Items
Search for items around the house during the party. Consider the room where you are holding the scavenger hunt. Make a list of the different items the children could search for in that room. For example, have them search for utensils and cookware in the kitchen, or toothpaste and mouthwash in the bathroom. Give the winner a "homey" gift such as a pair of funky socks, a new toothbrush or a fancy drinking cup.
Newspapers and Magazines
Host a sit-down scavenger hunt using recyclables. Make a list of several items inside the magazines and newspaper you have on hand. Consider items like advertisements, coupons or specific story headlines. Have the children cut out the items on their lists to win a prize. Offer prizes "in print" such as a small children's book or a magazine to the winner.
Glow in the Dark
Hunt for items in the dark. Place several different types of glow-in-the-dark necklaces, bracelets, rings and toys throughout the hunt location. Make sure the objects are well hidden to make it harder for the children to find them. Make a list of all the items you have hidden and give a copy to each child. Give the winner a large glow-in-the-dark wand or sword toy as a prize.
