Preteen Hawaiian Birthday Party Ideas

Give your pre-teen birthday girl a taste of the islands with a Hawaiian party.

Through the planning and effective implementation of a Hawaiian-themed party, you can transport your birthday party guests from their current ho-hum location to a tropical paradise. Nearly everyone would enjoy walking the sandy shores of a Hawaiian island, but doing so is not always economically feasible. Provide your pre-teen guests with the next best thing by planning a Hawaiian birthday party at your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Flip Flop Hunt

Many Hawaiian visitors and natives trade their close-toed shoes for easy-to-slip-on flip flops. Reflect this common footwear at your birthday party event by planning a flip flop hunt. To prepare for this activity, purchase an array of different colored flip flops. Separate each pair, hiding one shoe in the yard and placing the other in a basket. When game time arrives, give each guest one flip flop. Challenge guests to race about the yard searching for their shoe's mate. As guests find the other shoe, allow them to trade in their completed pair for a special prize.

Homemade Grass Skirt

Get your guests to don classic Hawaiian garb by creating home-made grass skirts. Prior to your event, purchase some rope and green raffia or tissue paper. Present each guest with a length of rope large enough to comfortably wrap around her waist. Allow the guest to place pieces of raffia or tissue paper around her rope to craft her grass skirt. Upon completion, encourage guests to don their newly minted clothing pieces to reflect the Hawaiian theme of the birthday party.

Hula Competition

Delight a dance loving birthday girl with a hula competition. Procure a video that shows guests do this classic Hawaiian dance. Play the video for your party guests, allowing them to observe the simple movements that characterize this elegant dance. After guests have seen the video and had time to practice, ask them take turns showing their best hula to their peers. Ask peers to rate the dances. Tally the scores and declare a hula contest winner. Present the winner with an appropriate prize, such as a silk lei painted gold to symbolize her victory.

Tasty Pineapple Treats

Pineapple is a popular Hawaiian sweet treat. Incorporate this tasty, and healthy, favorite into your birthday party food. Dress up your standard punch by floating pineapple rings on the top. Or consider trading your average birthday cake for a notably more Hawaiian pineapple upside-down cake. As guests snack on these tasty offerings, they can enjoy a little taste of the islands.
