The "Nancy Drew" mysteries were first published in 1930, but they have taken on new life in recent years as a series of computer games. "Nancy Drew: Danger by Design" takes place in the world of high fashion in Paris, France. Nancy jets off to Paris to work as an intern in the fashion studio of top fashion designer Minette. She notices that Minette exhibits some bizarre behavior and ultimate winds up investigating the cause.
General
The mode that you choose to play in any "Nancy Drew" game will make a big difference in how easy it is to get through the game without the help of a walkthrough. The Junior Detective mode offers simpler puzzles, the ability to call Bess, George, Frank or Joe for hints and a checklist of problems that need to be solved. These are not available in the Senior Detective mode.
Unlike some earlier "Nancy Drew" games, it does not make a difference what day it is in "Danger by Design." All puzzles will show up when you reach that point in the game, not only on a particular day. If you still wish to change to a new day, go back to JJ's apartment and enter the bedroom just past the phone.
"Danger by Design" has many anti-cheat devices. For many of the puzzles, you must go through all of the steps. Simply putting in the appropriate response or answer will not work.
If you get to a point in the game where Nancy tries to talk to people but has no new questions to ask them, it means that there is a puzzle that still needs to be solved before the game can move forward. Reread your checklist and journal to see what you've missed.
You can choose between two different endings. Tell Minette about the threatening letter that Heather sent for a bad ending, but don't tell her if you want a good ending.
Terminal Events
There are some specific events that will immediately end the game should they occur. The game will give you a second chance, but you still should save the game frequently while playing.
Minette will fire Nancy on the spot if she does not answer the phone in Minette's office before the fifth ring, if Nancy knocks over the chemicals in the darkroom or if she is captured by the police in the outer catacombs. Nancy will die if she stays underwater too long in the catacombs, swims into the fan to get the bottle of wine, does not defuse the paint bomb or loses the fight at the end of the game.
Easter Egg
Many developers hide deliberate jokes in their games and "Danger by Design" is no exception. When Nancy is in the darkroom, have her flush the toilet 10 times. The toilet will emit an interesting sound and an Easter egg will show up in your inventory. Finding this Easter egg will allow Nancy to skip the photo developing puzzle. Nancy will also be able to call the phone numbers found in Jean Mi's PDA to get some interesting messages and music.
