Create a clever tablecloth to reflect your theme.
Whether you are hosting a dinner party, a banquet, an intimate date for two or birthday party, making a unique tablecloth can add a certain flair and excitement to your décor. It can tie in the theme of your party and can protect your table in a cost-effective and innovative way. Does this Spark an idea?
Bedding
Look for fancy bedding or sheet sets. If the sheet you find has an obvious hem, which would be at the top or front of the bed, simply cut it off, fold a small hem and either sew or glue it closed. Your guests will never need to know the original purpose. If you are hosting a camping or outdoor themed party, look for flannel or plaid sheets. If you are putting together a romantic dinner, buy a lace sheet.
Other Fabrics
Don't let your table decorating imagination end with the dining section of the store. Branch out to other areas and look for other fabric that can cover your table. Sarapes and beach wraps work well for beach themes. A tree skirt would look nice at a Christmas get-together. Make your own tablecloth, with its own theme, using iron-on transfer paper and a couple yards of fabric. You can use any color fabric, although light colors work best. Purchase the transfer paper, place it in your printer and print pictures or quotes of your choice. Iron the pictures or words onto your fabric.
Papers
Paper products can serve as a canvas, as well as protecting the table from food and drink stains. Roll out parchment or butcher paper onto a table. The waxy underside will help stop any moisture from reaching the table, in the event of a spill. In addition, you or guests can write on the top of the table. If you are hosting a special meal, write a note to each guest. If you are hosting a kids' party, hand out crayons and colored pencils and let them entertain themselves with endless creativity. Give them a jump start by drawing tic-tac-toe boards and other games.
Natural
Let nature inspire you as you decorate your table. Use large banana leaves to cover your table and create a lush tropical theme. In the autumn or harvest seasons, use corn husks as a tablecloth. Tie or sew the leaves or husks together to create a cloth or glue them all to a roll of paper or fabric to keep them in place.
