Outdoor Birthday Party Games For Kids

Outdoor games help party guests burn off energy.

Outdoor birthday party games for kids allow much more mess and mayhem than indoor games. Outdoor games give kids enough room to splash, skip, run, jump, tumble and hop all over the yard. Mixing individual and team-based outdoor games not only keeps guests entertained, it ensures every child has a reasonable chance to win at least one game. Does this Spark an idea?

Water Balloon Volleyball

Cool off birthday party guests with an energetic game of water balloon volleyball. The game requires round water balloons filled three-fourths full so they don't pop too easily. The net for the game can consist of a sheet hanging on a clothesline or plastic netting strung from poles on each side. Guests break into two teams and follow basic volleyball rules, replacing the balloon when it pops.

Ice Cube Toss

Give a classic outdoor game an icy new twist to entertain kids at a birthday party. The game requires three decorated plastic buckets set on the lawn with a different point value assigned to each. Each player has three chances to toss an ice cube into one of the buckets. The player with the most points wins the game. You also can play the game with a carnival twist, where each player receives a prize based on their score.

Watermelon Bowling

Stock up on small round watermelons to amuse birthday party guests with a messy outdoor bowling game. The game requires a flat and smooth outdoor area, as well as 10 plastic soda bottles partially filled with water to serve as pins. Each player has two chances to roll the watermelon "ball" and knock down as many pins as they can. The player with the most points wins.

Water Relay

Buckets, sponges and water are all you need for a kids' water relay game. The game requires a water-filled bucket at the starting line and an empty bucket at the finish line. One player from each team soaks a sponge in the starting bucket and races to squeeze the water out in the bucket at the finish line. The team that fills their bucket first wins the game.

Pin-The-Ice-Cream-On-The-Cone

Entertain young kids at a birthday party with a sweet change to a traditional game. "Pin-the-Ice-Cream-on-the-Cone" requires a large picture of an ice cream cone and paper ice cream scoops with tape on the backs. Each blindfolded player has one chance to pin the ice cream on the cone. The player that gets the closest wins the game.

Races

Encourage young birthday party guests to burn off extra energy with a variety of outdoor races. Players can pair up and use ribbon to tie their legs together for a three-legged race. Other races include a crab walk race where each player arches back to walk on all fours or a one leg race where each player hops on one leg.
