Wacky Olympic Birthday Party Ideas

Hand out medals

The wacky Olympics theme adds a crazy twist to a sports-themed birthday party. Instead of traditional Olympic activities such as the long jump or running, the wacky Olympics activities require the kids to perform wacky stunts and physical activities. The theme is easy to adapt to fit any age group. The actual Olympic Games can inspire the decor and party details for the wacky Olympics party. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Homemade medals work well as the invitation for the wacky Olympics party. Cut a circle from gold poster board to create the medal. Write the party details on the medal shape to look like it is inscribed on the medal. Punch a hole near the top of each medal invitation. String a colorful ribbon through the hole and tie it to create a loop for the medal.

Decorations

The Olympic rings from the official Olympic games offer a simple idea for party decorations. Cut five large rings from cardboard and paint them in the corresponding colors: blue, yellow, black, green and red. Hang the rings to create the Olympic symbol on the wall. Paint a large welcome banner on a piece of butcher paper that says, "Welcome to the Wacky Olympics." You can also add the year to the sign.

Wacky Olympic Games

Keep in mind the age of the kids when planning the games for the Olympic party. One option that works well for any age group is an obstacle course. Set up the course in the backyard so the kids have plenty of space. Use everyday objects to create obstacles. A refrigerator box makes a good tunnel for the course. Paint the inside of the box with wacky patterns. Cover both ends of the box with a black plastic trash bag cut into strips to make it seem more like a spooky tunnel. Fill a kiddie pool with water and plastic alligators. Make the kids "swim" through it on their hands and knees. Beanbag mountains also bring fun to the course. Other Olympic game ideas include a bubble blowing contest, a backward walking race, balloon volleyball or a contest to see who can hop on one foot the longest.

Cake

A medal cake is simple to create at home. The design uses a baked round cake in any size as the medal. Ice it in your choice of colors to make it look like a medal. Write the birthday message on top of the cake to make it look like the inscription. Cut a long piece of wide ribbon. Tie it into the loop and press it into the top of the medal cake. Another option is to make cupcake medals in a similar way. Ice each cupcake to resemble a medal and include a small ribbon loop at the top.

Favors

Party favors offer the guests an entertaining thank you gift before they leave. Nearly any sports-themed items work well for the party favors. Coloring books, temporary tattoos, books, balls and sports-themed toys are ideal for the guests. You can also hand out toy medals at the end of the party games as a favor.
