Things To Know About Hawaii

Hawaii is the 50th state in the United States, located in the Pacific Ocean to the southwest of mainland America. It is a popular tourist destination and once important strategic position for the United States Military. Hawaii has a rich and interesting history that long preceded its time as an American state. It is made up of hundreds of islands, but the majority of the population presides on one of the eight main islands.

Climate

While the local climate varies from island to island, Hawaii has an overall tropic climate. Thanks to a constant breeze from the eastern trade winds, the temperatures in Hawaii rarely see the extreme highs associated with other tropical climates.

Main Islands

The main islands of Hawaii, where most of the population lives and the infrastructure has been built, are Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Oahu, Molokai, Kauai and Niihau.

Population

Hawaii has a population of 1.3 million people, which takes into account military presence on the island. The most populous island is Oahu, which has just under one million people in only 597 square miles.

History

Hawaii was populated by local Kapu tribe members and wasn't found by European explorers until James Cook landed in 1778. It became a United States state in 1959, and has been a popular tourist destination and military foothold ever since.

Culture

Hawaii has a rich Polynesian culture that survives to this day. They have brought the luau, ukulele, and other musical and theatrical elements into American culture since it became a state.

Education

The University of Hawaii is home to world-renowned research facilities that have made breakthroughs in oceanography, marine science and marine robotics.

Fun Fact

Because Hawaii had so recently a royal government of its own, it is the only state in the United States that has a royal palace.
