Mermaid Costume Ideas

Mermaid Costume Ideas

Many little girls fall in love with mermaids at some point. They show up everywhere from movies to bedtime stories. Much folklore and glamour surrounds these mythical creatures, and they have inspired many Halloween costumes. Whether you are trying to make a mermaid costume for a little girl or want to stand out in the grown-up version of the costume, there are plenty of creative ways to tackle this outfit. Does this Spark an idea?

Tail

Design a beautiful tail to be the central part of the costume. The tail is what will really define the costume and make you recognizable as a mermaid. Making a mermaid tail while still being able to walk around on two legs can be tricky. However, some clever camouflaging will do the trick. If you are able to use a sewing machine, you can finish this in no time. Go to your favorite craft store and pick out a great fabric that resembles shimmery fish scales. This type of fabric will probably be in the apparel fabric section. Shimmery taffeta works perfectly for this because it will naturally fan out. Pick out a somewhat stretchy synthetic fabric as well. Construct a skirt out of the stretchy material that tapers in to the knees. Then sew a few feet of taffeta onto the bottom of the stretchy fabric, gathering it at the seam. You can cut the bottom of the taffeta somewhat unevenly so that it fans out and resembles a fish tail.

Outfit Extras

Plan a top for your costume. This choice will be determined by the age of the wearer, the weather and where it will be worn. If it is warm enough, little girls can wear a bathing suit under their mermaid tail or wear a coordinating tank top. For cooler Halloween nights, try pairing a skin-colored turtleneck underneath. For a daring look, adult mermaids can wear a bikini top with their mermaid tail. For a more conservative look, wear a pretty sequined tank top. Footwear is another thing to think about. Sandals or flip flops would look perfect with this costume.

Accessories

Use sea-inspired accessories to finish off the look of your mermaid costume. Get creative by gathering together any seashells, sand dollars, starfish and any other treasures that were collected on a beach trip. If you don't own anything like that, craft stores usually carry them. String seashells and beads and make a beachy necklace. Use a hot glue gun to attach a starfish to your mermaid tail. Wear a string of pearls around your neck and pin a tropical flower in your hair. You can also use makeup to make yourself look a little more glamorous. Use iridescent shades of eye shadow to brighten your eyes and sweep glitter on your cheeks. For extra drama, wear a long, wavy, glamorous wig.
