Tropical Decorating Ideas

Sea shells are perfect as tropical decor.

Creating a tropical design for a party or an area of your yard can be a do-it-yourself adventure. Beach theme items such as colored umbrellas, palm trees and exotic sea shells are just a few of the staples you can use as tropical decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Party Favors

Nothing says tropical more than exotic sea shells, leis, hula girls, orange, yellow or green candles, real or fake fruit, printed table runners and placemats and oversize sunglasses. If you are having a party, consider giving some of these items away as gifts or using them as decor. Put a little bit of everything everywhere. Small seashells can be placed on tables or you can sprinkle bright confetti around a room. Confetti comes in many tropical themes such as flamingos, palm trees, tropical birds, tropical fish, fruit and flowers.

Make Your Own Palm Trees

Palm trees in multiple colors and varieties can be purchased at most home decorating and arts and crafts stores. Depending on your preferences, decorative palm trees average between 4 and 8 feet tall. You can also create your own arts and crafts palm trees by cutting palm fronds out of green construction paper and gluing them to cardboard cubes. Get creative and make homemade palm trees in different shapes and sizes. A single palm frond can also be used as a centerpiece.

Tropical Fruit & Flower Arrangements

Real or fake tropical fruit can be used as a table centerpiece, including grapes, coconuts, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, strawberries and apples. Or put a larger fruit, such as the pineapple, in the center of the table.. Or make pineapple boats or stacked fruit plates. Real fruit can be used as a decoration before it's eaten. Find tropical orchids at a flower shop and add them to your arrangement for flair. Tropical flowers include hibiscus, red anthurium and bird of paradise.

Tropical Backyard

Design a home away from home in your backyard by blocking the sun's tropical rays from your eyes with an umbrella, and adding some decor. Backyard umbrellas in bright, bold colors add a tropical atmosphere to your yard. Consider adding flowers, streamers, curtains, palm trees or hanging decorations to an area of the yards or tiki torches or citronella candles to a walkway.
