A luau is a fun and festive retirement party idea
Retiring is a life milestone that deserves to be celebrated with a party. Use food, music, games and decorations to set the tone of a Hawaiian luau. Send out invitations specifying the theme so that guests can come dressed appropriately and add to the festive atmosphere.
Decorations
Decorations are an integral part of a successful luau. Use large vases filled with colorful flowers like hibiscus and birds of paradise to transport guests to a tropical getaway. Scatter live palm trees around the party to add a touch of greenery. Use sarongs as non-traditional tablecloths and conch shells and straw beach hats for centerpieces. As guests arrive, supply them with leis, coconut bras, grass skirts and shell necklaces to complement the decor. Have the party around a pool surrounded by tiki torches if possible. Play tropical music, or consider hiring a small band for the ultimate atmosphere enhancer.
Food and Drink
Serve ham and pineapple skewers to create a tropical luau meal. Fresh fruit looks colorful on a buffet. Macadamia nuts are traditional Hawaiian nut and can be used as a breading on a fish or chicken dish. Prepare a rice dish with coconut as a side dish. Serve drinks in hurricane glasses or halved coconut shells with colorful drink umbrellas and large slices of fresh fruit. Blue Hawaiians, Mai Tais, Pina Colodas and tequila sunrises are drink ideas that fit the luau theme. A non-alcoholic punch with sherbet and ginger ale should also be offered.
Games
Limbo is a traditional game to play at a luau party. Play limbo music and appoint two people to hold the limbo stick. Award a prize to the winner who can go the lowest.
A hula hoop contest is another "island-themed" activity that can help guests interact. Give everyone who wishes to participate a hula hoop. See who can swivel their hips and keep the hula hoop spinning round. The person who can keep the hoop going the longest is declared the winner
