Winter Hawaiian Party Ideas

Shovel the deck, and pull out the barbecue.

When the snow falls and the icy wind howls, it's no wonder people start dreaming of hot, sunny places. Even if you can't whisk your family and friends away on a private jet, you can throw a Hawaiian bash that will feel like a miniature vacation. Create tropical fete at home with festive decorations and traditional Hawaiian food. Does this Spark an idea?

Surf Style

Hang Hawaii travel posters.

Decorate the party area in classic Hawaii surf style. Rent a projector, and play surf movies continuously on a main wall (keep the sound low). Play surf guitar music like Dick Dale. Prop surfboards against the walls. Hang vintage or reproduction surf movie posters from the sixties.

Traditional Feast

Making poi is a complex, traditional process.

In addition to the usual party fare like soda and potato chips, make several traditional Hawaiian dishes, such as poi (a dish made with taro root). Dig out the barbecue---yes, even in the snow---and roast pork skewers alternated with pineapple, marinated in a tropical sauce. If your friends are foodies, make the party a culinary adventure potluck. Invite everyone to bring a traditional Hawaiian or Polynesian dish, accompanied by a little card explaining the dish's ingredients and history.

Tropical Drinks

Cocktail umbrellas are essential drink accessories.

No Hawaiian-themed party would be complete without a selection of tropical drinks. Stock up to make fruity cocktails, and rent a margarita machine if you're of legal drinking age in your area. Otherwise, get a blender or two and plenty of smoothie ingredients. Freeze a dozen trays of ice cubes ahead of time. Canned and frozen fruit are fine for smoothies. Inexpensive ingredients like bananas and pineapple help "stretch" the more expensive ingredients, like mangoes, berries and guava. Use tropical fruit juices as your smoothie base.

Water Fun

Wading pools simulate strolling along the shoreline.

Turn the heat up high. In a main party hangout area, lay down a tarp, set up a kiddie pool and arrange chairs in a circle around the pool. Fill the pool halfway. Sweaty party guests can sit down and relax with cool feet---a welcome feeling in the middle of winter.
