Winter Tropical Vacations

Warm, sunny beaches are a cure for the winter blues.

A tropical vacation is a sure way to beat the winter doldrums. When you've had enough of gray skies, rain, snow and sleet, it just might be time for you to head to the tropics for fun and sun. Fabulous destinations await you in the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, where you can enjoy local sites, cultures and cuisines. You will feel refreshed and ready to tackle work back home after a winter tropical vacation.

Cook Islands, South Pacific

Cook Islands is a small island nation in the South Pacific. It's capital, Rarotonga, is a reef-rimmed volcanic island with mountains clustered in the center, easily traversed in about 50 minutes by vehicle. As a tropical retreat, Rarotonga meets all the requirements: sandy beaches, clear lagoons, palm trees and a laid-back atmosphere. Dive operators provide lessons and take clients to explore shipwrecks and see fabulous corals and sea life. Island night shows feature native dancers, as well as local delicacies cooked in earthen ovens and served up in woven baskets or on banana leaves. Reach Rarotonga on a weekly direct flight from Los Angeles International Airport.

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is home to Cancun, where ancient Mayan culture meets modern luxury resorts and festive nightlife. Swim with gentle whale sharks, the largest species of fish, and visit Xel Ha, the national aquarium, where fish live outdoors in their natural habitat. Tour the ruins of Tulum, near Playa del Carmen, to climb a Mayan pyramid; or book a trip to Chichen Itza, the Yucatan's largest and most famous Mayan destination. Ferry over to Cozumel for excellent scuba diving. Houston is an easy gateway to the Yucatan Peninsula from the U.S.

Jamaica

Jamaica is the perfect spot for a winter vacation. In Montego Bay, on the northern coast, stay in a romantic colonial-style hotel and have fresh cocktails served on an oversized veranda. Walk over to the beach for a swim or to mingle with friendly locals; fresh, ripe bananas and oranges are a must-try. A drive along the northern side of the island will take you through cool mountains where delicious coffee is grown. The nightclubs in Kingston feature authentic reggae. Jamaica is a short flight from Miami.
