Swimming Pool Decoration Ideas

A brightly tiled or painted pool bottom will make your pool look clearer and more inviting.

A swimming pool makeover can give your backyard a sleek and beautiful new look. The ways you can decorate your swimming pool are endless, and you are really only limited by your creativity. A few of these simple ideas to get you started on your swimming pool's new look. Does this Spark an idea?

Paint

Repaint your pool using epoxy paint. While repainting your pool will help your water look clearer (especially if you paint it with a light blue or green), you should only embark on this activity if you truly know what you're doing. Otherwise, go to your local pool supply store and ask who they recommend to give your pool the once-over.

Mural at the Bottom

Greeks used to say that murals at the bottom of the pool would cause swimmers to drown by staring at them too much. However, a mural at the bottom, made of tile or painted, can give your pool a refreshing look. Embark on this project by yourself by draining your pool and beginning the job with epoxy paint, or call your local pool supply store to get recommendations. Like painting your pool, this activity is best only accomplished by seasoned professionals or those who really know what they're doing.

Plants

Plant a few tropical trees and shrubs around your pool. Small palm trees and birds of paradise are good ones to start with. These plants will give you a feeling of having your own tropical oasis right in your yard.

Lights

Install lights on the bottom or sides of your pool. These will not only enable you to swim after dark, but depending on the model you chose, you may be able to change the color to create mood lighting. Again, this feat should only be attempted by a seasoned professional. Ask your local pool supply store or electrician for a recommendation.

Fountain

Install a fountain next to the pool or inside of it. Call your local plumber or pool supply store to speak to someone about embarking on this adventure yourself or who to hire. Fountains made of rocks can provide a more natural feel while those made of tile can blend into your pool setting. You could also have a fountain made so that it starts a little farther up from the pool while water drips into it.

Retile the Pool Area

Have a landscaper remodel the area around the pool or the pool itself. Rocks (combined with tropical plants) can evoke a natural feel as though you had your own lagoon in your backyard. Tiles (especially those with a pattern) will give you the feeling of owning your own Greco-Roman bath.
