A winter luau might seem oxymoronic, but this party allows you to add a tropical touch to the cold winter months. Although you will probably need to have the party indoors, you can still create a tropical paradise in your home. Add some winter-themed activities and decorations to your luau to give it a one-of-a-kind twist. Does this Spark an idea?
Invitation
Combine the winter and luau ideas on your party invitation. Include a picture of Santa Claus surfing if your winter luau is around the holidays. Select an image of the beach as your invitation backdrop, but attach small snowflakes to it. Use wording such as "Get out of the cold and come to the island! Join us for a winter luau party!" Include all of the details about your event, including the location, date and time of the luau. If you want guests to wear costumes or bring their own beverages, indicate this on the invitation, as well.
Decorations
A classic luau calls for tropical decorations such as tiki torches and leis, but give these decor items a decidedly winter touch. If you're throwing your winter luau during the holiday season, wrap twinkle lights around the base of the tiki torches. Make red and green Christmas-themed leis or all-white leis made of paper snowflakes. Set up a tiki bar, but toss fake snow across the top of the bar. For centerpieces, fill beach buckets full of fake sand, and place silk Hawaiian flowers in them. Or make "sand" snowmen using plastic foam balls painted tan. Add sunglasses and leis to the snowmen to make them party ready. Hang paper snowflakes and beach balls from the ceiling to marry the two divergent party themes.
Activities
On your invitation, encourage guests to dress in their best winter luau attire, and see how creative they can get. Someone might come in a grass skirt with long johns underneath, while another might attach Hawaiian flowers to her scarf to create a cold-weather-appropriate lei. Have a costume contest, and let guests vote on who came in the best winter luau attire. Play beach-themed music such as Jimmy Buffet or Bob Marley. Let guests do the limbo, but decorate your limbo stick, which can be as simple as a dowel rod or yard stick, with fake snow.
