Winter Party Decorating Ideas

Decorate with the colors of winter.

Whether you are planning a Winter Solstice party or a Christmas in July party, decorating is easy to do if you think cold. If you don't live where it snows, you can still make your guests feel like they arrived in a sleigh and need a warm fire with a few seasonal decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

Cool Colors

Capture a winter theme by using soft, cool colors of the season. Use a shimmering, deep blue tablecloth with silvery touches like beads or stars. Deep forest green is also a good decorating color choice for winter. Use cedar or other evergreens in a centerpiece, or on the mantel and a green velvet table runner on the buffet or sideboard. Winter is also the time for soft lighting, so change a few light bulbs to a lower wattage or use candlelight.

Sparkly Lights

Winter is the time of short, cold days and long, starry nights. Also snow reflects light. To invoke these characteristics of winter, use twinkle lights for decoration. Put small mirrors on the mantel or sideboard, and then wind a strand of lights in some greenery. Add some reflective marbles in the bottom of a glass vase before adding the arrangement for a little extra sparkle. Or put small, shiny Christmas tree ornaments in a clear glass vase for a simple decoration.

Finishing Touches

For a children's party, let the kids make a few decorations, such as snowmen from styrofoam balls, or mitten garlands from felt. When decorating for adult parties, don't forget the extend the theme into the lavatory. Add a candle and match the hand towels to the color scheme for a simple update. Line the path to your door with luminaries to light the way for your guests.
