Pirate Theme Birthday Ideas

Send a group of children on a pirate treasure hunt.

Whether you love Captain Hook or Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate-themed birthday party is a golden opportunity for a little bit of childish fun for a group of any age. The theme incorporates humorous costumes of historical pirates that left their mark through terror and treachery. Give those at the party a lesson in pirate sayings so they will be spouting phrases such as "Give me ye gold, matey" for weeks. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Print pirate-themed party using your home computer and one of many pirate-themed invitation templates available for free online. If you are looking for something a little more creative, draw a picture of the neighborhood on a piece of paper with the party information on the back. Roll it up and tie it with a piece of ribbon. Remove the labels from empty plastic water bottles and put a little sand in them. Place the invitations in the bottles, paint the lids brown to resemble a cork and screw them on. For a couple of extra laughs, tell everyone to show up dressed like a pirate.

Decorations

Using a home computer and printer, create or print pirate flags, attach them to sticks and place them throughout the party area. If the party is in more than one room, then each room should have its own flag that declares the room belongs to a certain pirate. Hang or place fish nets throughout the party area and place rubber or plastic fish and other sea creatures in the nets. Stuffed or inflatable items, such as parrots and swords, add to the pirate d cor.

Activities

For adult pirate-themed parties, have a game of pirate trivia using information from famous pirate movies. A treasure hunt is a great activity that is sure to keep everyone busy. Give adults a challenging set of clues that lead them throughout the neighborhood or city while children are provided with easy pictures of objects to find around the house or backyard. For a child's pirate party, have the group make imitation telescopes from paper towel rolls and decorative items. Each child paints a paper towel roll or draws pictures on it with markers for a quick drying option. Lay out the decorative items, such as imitation jewels, feathers and sequins, and have the group glue the items on the painted rolls to finish the telescopes.

Party Favors

Party favor ideas include candy necklaces and gold-wrapped chocolate coins. For a homemade approach, make cookies shaped like pirate hats or swords. Handing out the flags on sticks used as decorating items is a great way to provide additional party favors while cleaning the house of the decorations at the same time. Give stuffed animals, such as parrots, to party-goers of any age. Temporary tattoos allow young guests to continue the theme at home on their own time without parents worrying about permanent coloring.
