Oahu Fishing Guide

These waters offer some of the best fishing around.

Among other attractions, Oahu offers beautiful fishing spots and a variety of fish to be caught. There are fishing areas and opportunities for fishermen of every skill level, and you can even rent equipment if it's too much to carry your own along. Blue marlin, striped marlin, skipjack tuna, wahoo and yellow fin tuna are among the most popular fish caught in Oahu.

Deep Sea Fishing

The easiest way to go deep sea fishing in Oahu is to book a fishing charter. The company will act as your personal guide and supply you with equipment as well. They know the best spots and are very familiar with the waters, so they can keep you safe. The companies can also take you to a few different spots during the day. To choose the best town to charter a fishing boat from, think about the quieter spots on the island. The North Shore and Haleiwa offer quiet waters with less tourists than the Honolulu area, as do places on the opposite side of the island.

If you prefer to go out on your own, you can rent a boat and venture out to sea. However, you must be careful about where you head and the areas you choose if you are unfamiliar with the waters.

Surf Fishing

You can fish right off the beach in a few places. Fishing in state parks and recreation areas such as Sans Souci State Recreation Area, is regulated by the park service. Barbers Point Beach Park and Chun's Reef - Kawailoa also have good fishing. There are areas that offer both fishing and swimming, so be sure to be cognizant of the swimmers in these areas. Don't cast your line in a swimming or snorkeling area.

Fly Fishing

Though not the most popular or talked about fishing in Hawaii, Oahu still offers great reef and flats areas for fly fishing. There is often sharp edges of coral in these areas, so be sure to wear old sneakers, rubber boots or some kind of protection on your feet. You can catch trevally, bonefish, and goatfish in these areas. Keehi Lagoon, Aina Haina and Kaneohe Bay are the best areas for fly fishing (see Reference 3).

Kayak Fishing

If you want to try something unique on Oahu and you love fishing, you should consider kayak fishing. On the West Shore, kayak fishing is popular. You can rent fishing-ready kayaks prepared to carry you and all your gear. You can also do tandem kayak fishing. Try Two Good Kayaks or Go Bananas Kayaks for information, tours, rentals, sales, and any assistance you may need in setting out on the water.

Fresh Water versus Salt Water

Licenses are required for fresh water on Oahu, and they are easy to obtain. There aren't many freshwater fishing spots, but there are some streams, small rivers and small lakes in which you can catch tucanare, bass, perch, catfish, and tilapia. Lake Wilson and Nuuanu Reservoir are the two best spots on Oahu for freshwater fishing (see Reference 3).
