Though it is often celebrated with barbecues and picnics, parades and flags, the fireworks displays are what many are most anxious to see at the end of the day. In many towns and cities, parks or fairgrounds are a good place to view 4th of July fireworks. Professionals set off the displays and people sometimes relax on blankets or lawn chairs to watch. Food and beverages are usually welcome (and sometimes even provided) at these family-friendly events. If you live near a national park or monument, particularly one associated with United States history or historical figures, it is possible that they will also have a fireworks display.
Waterfronts
Find a comfortable spot to watch far-off displays.
Water reflects the light, so waterfronts are a favorite place for 4th of July fireworks displays. If you live near a waterfront -- ocean, lake, or other water -- inquire about their 4th of July plans. If the ones nearest you are not having a fireworks display, they may know of somewhere nearby that is putting on one. Waterfront fireworks displays can magnify the experience, as you may be able to watch the fireworks in the air, and their reflection in the water, depending on your location. Large cities with harbors, such as New York and Boston, offer especially great waterfront displays.
Arenas
Fireworks can light up the entire sky.
Large sports or other arenas are a favorite venue for 4th of July celebrations and fireworks. These celebrations are open to the public, and the fireworks can often be viewed from outside the arena itself. If you prefer to be out of the crush of people, find a spot outside the arena to watch from. Bring snacks, park your car somewhere, and you and your family can enjoy the view in comfort.

Television and the Internet make viewing 4th of July celebrations simple and safe. Some people are either unable to travel to another location or just prefer to be home in the evenings. In this case, you can take advantage of technology and watch the best fireworks displays put on anywhere. If you live in a smaller county, it is likely that local fireworks displays will be lovely and exciting -- but not a match for the larger city displays. Depending on your time zone, you may be able to have the best of both worlds. Watch the earlier-time-zone fireworks on television, then go out later to watch the local displays with your family, friends or community. If you live in the right location, you may even be able to watch fireworks from your balcony or yard.
