What Foods Go Well With Pineapple

Pineapples go well with many different types of food.

The sweet and sour taste of pineapple makes a refreshing treat on its own. Still, many cooks enjoy combining this tropical fruit with other foods. From melons and berries in fruit salads to ham and cheese on Hawaiian pizza, pineapple goes well with a wide variety of different foods. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Fruit

The tangy and sweet taste of pineapples goes well with other fruits. Add chunks of pineapple along with pieces watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, grapes, strawberries and other fruit to create a tropical fruit salad. For a fun twist on a fruit salad, create fruit kebabs: slide chunks of pineapple and other fruit onto wooden skewers and serve alone or with chocolate sauce or whipped cream. Fruit smoothies of blended pineapple, strawberries, bananas and other tropical fruits make a refreshing treat on a warm day.

Meat

Pineapple pairs well with many types of meats. One favorite combination is ham and pineapple. Grilled ham steak seasoned with a zesty Dijon mustard sauce benefits from the sweetness of grilled pineapple slices. Hawaiian pizza, topped with pieces of ham and chunks of pineapple, provides diners with bites of sweet and savory. Other tasty meat-pineapple combinations include smoked chicken sausage with pineapple and kebabs made of chicken, pineapple and bell peppers.

Seafood

Seafood and fruit are a winning combination. Rather than topping fish with lemon or other citrus, try whipping up a delicious pineapple salsa. A mixture of chopped pineapple, red bell pepper, tomato and jalapeno that's been simmered and cooled makes a refreshing topping for seafood as well as chicken. For an even simpler recipe, try bathing salmon or another type of fish in pineapple juice, then grilling. The pineapple will impart its zippy flavor.

Desserts

Pineapple upside-down cake is a classic dessert that pairs moist golden cake with pineapple. Pairing pineapple rings with maple syrup, brown sugar and butter gives this cake great depth of flavor. For cooks looking for a healthier dessert option, pineapple and coconut can be mixed together to create a nutritious pineapple-coconut sorbet. The two flavors, featured in pina coladas, go well together.
