History
The culture of Hawaii has changed greatly over the centuries. In 1778, Captain James Cook arrived in Hawaii. At this time, there were between 300,000 and 400,000 native Hawaiians, known as the kanaka maoli. Over the next century, the native population was ravaged by the many diseases brought by foreigners. Smallpox, measles, influenza, and whooping cough tore through the population, reducing it by 80-90 percent by the end of the century. By 1878, there were only 40,000 to 50,000 native Hawaiians left on the islands. Hawaii has become a melting pot since. The islands are home to Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Portuguese and Caucasians.
Types
Hawaii's ethnic diversity has given it a very unique culture. Overall, the residents of Hawaii are very tolerant of cultural differences. There is no single ethnic group which holds a majority here. There is, however, some tension regarding Americans from the mainland. Caucasians from the mainland are referred to as haoles. This is often considered to be an insult. Some of the resentment here stems from the fact that many companies are largely controlled from mainland America. Overall, the culture of Hawaii holds on to many ancient Hawaiian customs, while allowing for unique infusions from other cultures.

The arts are an important feature in Hawaiian culture. Dance, music and art are all prominent in the islands. The most famous dance of the islands is the hula. The hula was originally a dance reserved for religious purposes and could only be performed by men. Today, the image of graceful women performing this elegant dance with swaying hips and hands is commonly associated with a visit to Hawaii. Tourists can now not only view contemporary hula performances for entertainment, they can often take lessons and participate in them. The hula dance is accompanied by percussion instruments, ukuleles and bright costumes. Hawaiian music is also important to the local people. The word "aloha" and its many meanings is a popular phrase in Hawaii. Aloha means both hello and goodbye. This word is also used to describe love, affection and compassion. Aloha embodies the most important values of the Hawaiian people. Other common words include "akahai," which describes one's gentle and modest demeanor, "lokahi," which means harmony and peace, and "oluolu," which means agreeable and pleasant.

Today, the everyday lives of many Hawaiians revolve around tourism. The islands are a popular vacation destination for vacationers from around the world. Tourism is the largest industry in Hawaii and employs a large percentage of the population. Surfing is another popular activity. The sport originated in Hawaii, and these islands still have some of the best locations for surfing. Tourists often come here to hit the waves or attend competitions. Many locals began surfing at a young age.
