What To Do For A Winter Luau Party Outside

What to Do for a Winter Luau Party Outside

The time of year doesn't necessarily have to matter when it comes to throwing an outdoor party. Provided the temperatures are not dangerously cold and guests are in appropriate attire, even a winter luau party outside can be fun and entertaining. The unconventional nature of your party alone is sure to get guests to RSVP. While there are a few things you'll want to do to make it an enjoyable time, your luau can be just as tropical as if it were in Hawaii. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Invite guests with invitations that inform them that the party will be outside. Request that they wear protective clothing for your region and daily temperatures. Over their clothes they can add Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and coconut tops, but warmth is the key, depending on where you live. A winter luau in Florida will not be as much of a concern as one in Michigan.

2. Decorate your yard or outdoor patio to look like the tropics. Add fake palm trees, colorful hanging paper lanterns, a piñata and even use a grass tablecloth. If you have the ability, bright floral fabrics could be hung along the outside of your home, around your deck or draped from the center of a patio umbrella.

3. Plan your menu of warm recipes such as cooked ham and fire-baked potatoes, and be sure to include a hot cider.

4. Set your table with room for decorative paper plates and cups that reflect the luau theme. You can also place fake tropical flowers in a vase and even include a few bottles of sunscreen on the table.

5. Light a fire in a fire barrels or in a dug-in fire pit, and keep a good supply of firewood nearby to feed the fire during the length of the party. Be sure you are holding your fire in accordance with any city or county laws before you light it.

6. Greet your guests as they arrive with flower or plastic leis. Because the party is outdoors, you may want to give out heat packs as well for guests to put in their pockets. Usually used for camping, heat packs activate when shaken and can stay warm for hours. If you have purchased grass skirts for the occasion, make sure to give them out at the door, too, and encourage guests to wear their sunglasses.

7. Hold games and competitions after all your guests have arrived. Activities such as hula dancing, doing the limbo and hula hooping are not only fun challenges, but they keep the body moving and warm without getting sweaty under a thick coat. Keep music playing to encourage dancing even when socializing.
