What Is A Theme

Computer themes are simple to download and install onto your computer. They add spice for everyday use. You can also obtain seasonal themes for special holidays. A theme can change the appearance of your computer to give it a personal touch and imagination.

Function

A theme is a program to install on your computer to change the appearance. You can decide on several types of themes, or you can create your own. The purpose is to customize your computer to your specifications. When you reinstall Windows or purchase a new hard drive, you have a blank pallet. With desktop themes, you can change various aspects of your Windows appearance with one simple program. If you cannot find the correct theme to satisfy your tastes, you can choose to create your own with a free program or by changing certain aspects of your Windows options.

Types

Seasonal themes can be a great addition to any computer. Christmas decorations with lights, snow, Santa and presents are obtainable. You can find religious themes for Christmas such as Jesus, nativity scenes and the manger scene. Hanukkah themes are available as well. You can change your computer to Thanksgiving, Halloween or Easter. Even Independence Day and Presidents Day themes can be located.

Nature themes such as rivers, lakes and mountains would brighten up your computer. Lions, Koala bears and Komodo dragons are available for your desktop.

Sports, celebrities and movie themes are obtainable for your computer. These can include football stars, your favorite movies from the past and recent shows or a theme with a movie star.

Features

In addition to desktop wallpaper, computer themes give you different desktop icons, sounds and color schemes. When you install a theme onto your computer, everything changes. If you decide upon a Christmas theme, the desktop picture could be a snowy house scene. The common desktop icons, such as "My Computer," and "Recycle Bin," may change to gifts or a Santa. Snow falling, Christmas songs or fire crackling could be your start-up sounds and the noise you may hear from clicking on certain icons. The color scheme from a Christmas theme will change your windows with blues, greens or whites.

Prevention/Solution

Changing your desktop theme is a simple solution. For Windows XP and Windows Vista, it takes approximately 5 minutes to change your theme after it has been downloaded.

In Windows XP, right click on your desktop. Select "Properties." A window entitled "Display Properties" will appear. You can choose a stock Windows theme or choose "Browse" to find the theme you just downloaded. Once you have decided on a theme, click "Apply." Wait approximately 5 seconds and your theme will appear.

In Windows Vista, the process is slightly longer. Right-click on your desktop. Select "Personalize." A window will pop up--"Appearance and Sounds." Click on "Theme." Another window will appear that is your theme settings. Choose a Windows Vista theme or browse to use the one you downloaded. Click "Apply," and your new computer theme will appear.

Warning

Downloading a theme from a site you have never been to can be dangerous to your computer. When you locate the theme, after downloading it run a virus scan on the file. This will ensure that your theme will not install a virus onto your computer. After visiting the theme websites, run a spyware and adware scanner. You also should use a virus scanner after you are done with the theme websites. Some of the sites are reputable, but others may harm your computer.
