A 50th anniversary menu can follow any theme as long as it is desirable to the celebrating couple.
Like all birthdays and anniversaries, there is no set menu theme for a fiftieth anniversary outside of what you choose. That is, a menu for a fiftieth wedding anniversary party can be anything that suits the liking of the celebrating couple. The type of food served depends on the host's budget, the number of people attending, the tastes and personalities of the couple, and whether or not there is a party theme.
Golden Decadence
The fiftieth wedding anniversary is known as the golden anniversary as it is a monumental achievement to reach. To incorporate glittering gold into the party's menu, utilize gold leaf or serve food items that are yellow in color. Gold leaf is an edible decoration that comes in thin delicate sheets. Virtually tasteless, it can be added to items both savory or sweet. Cakes, cupcakes and chocolates can be decorated with gold leaf as can any variety of cooked meat. Alternatively, focus the menu around gourmet meats and seafood, such as steak, crab, oysters and scallops. Side dishes can include mashed yellow potatoes, corn, saffron risotto and roasted vegetables. Caviar and toast can be served as an appetizer along with any other foods that the couple particularly enjoys.
Retro Menu
A retro menu recreates the foods served during the time of the couple's wedding. For example, if the wedding took place in the 1960s, consider serving foods like fondue, gelatin molds, ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, and even Tang and RC Cola. One way to obtain ideas is to look through the couple's wedding photos or ask them what was served at their wedding reception dinner. If possible, serve the same dishes that they ate at their wedding dinner. Improvements or alterations can be made, but a retro blast from the past can be a very sentimental and heartwarming experience for the couple.
Barbecue/Luau
If you are planning a relaxed gathering with friends and family, serve foods common to a barbecue or throw together a luau theme. Barbecue-friendly dishes include steaks, grilled chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs along with potato salads, pasta salads, grilled corn, potato chips and pretzels. A luau can include tropical fruity drinks made with or without alcohol, grilled vegetable and meat kabobs, pulled pork sandwiches and fruit salad.
Cocktail Snacks
For a cocktail gathering, serve a variety of classic cocktail foods that will please any generation. Meat and cheese trays, meatballs, shrimp cocktail, tapas, bruschetta, spiced nuts, cupcakes, chocolates, brownies and cookies are all classic cocktail foods that appeal to a wide range of people. Include a few of the couple's favorite foods in the menu to make it more personal. When possible, include gold-themed items, such as gold leaf-decorated chocolates or Champagne.
