What Do Hawaiian Flowers Mean

Hibiscus sends a message.

Hawaii is famous for its tropical flowers and flower garlands, called leis. The flowers often have significance and are connected to island legends. According to master lei maker Barbara Meheula, "In Hawaii, flowers are unique because everything has a meaning."

Ohia

The ohia flower is also called the "fire flower" and is the flower of the Big Island. In Hawaiian legend, the beautiful red ohia blossom is sacred to Pele, the volcano goddess.

Naupaka

The naupaka flower grows on a shrub in mountainous or beachy areas. It is white with purple streaks and resembles a half flower, with petals missing. According to Hawaiian legend, it symbolizes an ancient islander separated from her lover.

Pikake

Pikake is the flower of romance, and a traditional bridal flower in Hawaii. Hawaii's Princess Kaiulani named it after the peacock.

Ilima

The yellow or orange ilima blossom is the flower of the island of Oahu and is a symbol of love. It was once worn only by Hawaiian royalty.

Hibiscus

The hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii and can be used to send a message of a woman's relationship status. Worn behind the left ear, the hibiscus says, "I am in a relationship"; worn behind the right signals, "I am single and available."
