Vacationers can walk the Ala Kahakai, a 175-mile, national historic trail connecting ancient temples and communities on Hawaii's western coast. For a further history lesson, vacationers can view stone carvings, called petroglyphs, on the marked petroglyph trail. The carvings are thought to be astronomical symbols, travel markers or documentations of historic events.


Kolea renters can also view the series of anchialine ponds, shallow lava pools which provide homes for crustaceans, mollusks, red shrimps and other various small fishes.

Vacationers can further explore the big island of Hawaii outside the Waikoloa Beach Resort. One popular destination is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located 30 miles southwest of Hilo. The park features the Kilauea Volcano, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Visitors can hike the 150 miles of trails, which wind through volcano craters and rainforests. There's also the Thurston Lava Tube, a lava cave formed after molten lava cooled and created a narrow, tube-shaped formation.
