The new Managua Cathedral is an imposing edifice.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, or the New Cathedral of Managua, was inaugurated in 1993. This new cathedral replaced the old Managua Cathedral, which was damaged in the 1972 earthquake. There are a number of guided tours of Managua that visit both the old and new cathedrals.
Guided Tours of Managua
The old Cathedral of Managua is still standing, although damaged by an earthquake.
The Private Guides organisation provides English-speaking tour guides and offers city tours that visit selected monuments of Managua, including the cathedrals. It is forbidden to go inside the old cathedral, as it is unsafe.
Immaculate Conception Cathedral
Managua Cathedral is open to visitors and is a popular tourist attraction, although guided tours of the building are not available. The Cathedral is open to the public for worship and sightseeing.
Virtual Tour of Managua Cathedral
Managua Cathedral offers a virtual tour of their unusual building on their website (see Reference 3). Most aspects of the cathedral are photographed, including the modernistic roof, nave, cornerstone and altar.
