Christmas is a season for family, gift giving, good food and, of course, creative and astounding holiday decorations. The lawn and home's periphery are ideal sites for exhibiting your exuberant, festive spirit to the neighborhood. Make your house stand out by utilizing lights in a variety of ways, from decorations in and of themselves, to highlighting other decorations, to transforming existing parts of your home's exterior. Does this Spark an idea?
Splashes of Green and Red
Replace the bulbs in your exterior lights with green and red bulbs. Install several temporary, outdoor spotlights with green and red bulbs along the your home's exterior wall. Place the lights toward the ground or under the eaves. Point the lights toward the wall so they create long splashes of Christmas colors.
Christmas Greeting on a Fence
Think of fences as empty billboards where you can place Christmas greetings made up of letters outlined with strings of lights. Stick to graphic, blocky, simple text and short phrases to ensure legibility from afar. Possible phrases to spell out in lights include "SEASON'S GREETINGS," "JOY TO THE WORLD" and "HO HO HO."
Christmas Lawn Ornaments
Shape chicken wire to make structures for a wide range of Christmas light sculptures. Options for simple chicken wire shapes include a candy cane, snowman, gingerbread man or Christmas tree. Secure chicken wire shapes to the ground with stakes and wrap them in strings of Christmas lights.
Glowing Angels
Sew simple angel shapes out white, waterproof fabric. Double the shapes, sew them together and stuff them like a pillow. Hang the angels from your eaves and from trees. Shine spotlights on them. From a distance, at night and in the breeze, the angels will look as if they are floating in the air.
Illuminated Garlands
Combine Christmas lights with evergreen branches and other winter flora to create lighted garlands. Use the garlands to create swags, which can drape over fences, window ledges or archways. Evergreen garlands, along with string lights, can also wrap around posts and columns.
