Pirate costumes look good with lots of accessories.
Dressing up as a pirate has returned as a top Halloween costume after the success of actor Johnny Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. A pirate costume can be fun and comfortable without requiring a lot of effort to put together a convincing outfit. Recycling strips of fabric from around the house to use as headbands, sashes or eye patches is a way to add on to the basic look. Shoes can be anything from work boots to loafers, preferably ones with an old-fashioned buckle. A pirate hat is a key part of the costume, but wild-looking hair and a headband are also effective replacements.
Pirate Costume With Tall Boots
A pair of loose pants tucked into a pair of tall work boots will create a bunching effect that works well in any pirate costume. Sweatpants that are not very thick and have a bright color will look old fashioned as long as any elastic is covered, such as the waistband or ankles. An open or scantily buttoned button down shirt, or a Henley shirt with three buttons at the collar serve as a top. And complete the look with a vest. Many of these garments can be found at thrift stores or second hand shops separately without spending much money.
Pirate Costume With Striped Pants
This outfit begins with loose, striped pants, which can even be pajama pants if they are colorful. Common pirate colors are black, red and dark blue, although some sashes and hats can be bright accents in any masculine color. Pajama pants can be tucked into boots or cut off under the knee, tied tightly around the calves and worn with thin trouser socks and loafers. The standard pirate shirt is a button down, with or without a collar. The collar can be cut off an old shirt and worn with a scarf tied in front as many pirate costumes include frilly accessories.
Pirate Coats and Accessories
Attitude is an important part of wearing a pirate costume.
Pirate costumes can start with baggy pants in a dark color and add the flashy elements on top. A silk or satin shirt can shine under a long vest or coat with a large brown leather belt over top. A brown cape can go over this, tied with string around the neck. A detailed pirate costume will tuck plastic weapons into the belt, which adds to the look but can be impractical for walking around. A pirate hat is a popular accessory but it does not have to be the oblong-shaped hat with a skull and bones, any hat with a wide brim and a feather will also match the description of a pirate. Gold costume jewelry is also part of the look and can include necklaces, bracelets, rings or all three.
