Under The Sea Birthday Party Theme Ideas

Kids love underwater-themed birthday parties.

Whether it's due to a fascination with sharks, tropical fish, whales, coral reefs, sea stars, or some other ocean animal, many children love the sea. Using an under-the-sea birthday party theme will ensure that the birthday child enjoys the decorations, cake and activities at his birthday party. Whether indoors in the dead of winter or outside during the warmer months, an under-the-sea party can include many different underwater elements. Does this Spark an idea?

Movie Theme

The easiest way to put together an under-the-sea birthday party is to use an underwater movie as the springboard. Films such as "Finding Nemo," "The Little Mermaid" and "Shark Tale" or television shows such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" can be the focus of the party. It is easy to find invitations, plates, birthday hats and other party items with movie characters on them.

Invitations

Under-the-sea birthday party invitations can be written on pieces of blue paper or cutouts in the shape of seashells and then placed in a zippered plastic bag with sand, small shells and glitter. Another idea is to use a bottle instead of a bag so the invitation is a message in a bottle. Regardless of the form they take, under-the-sea birthday party invitations can be full of underwater wordplay, such as using "o-fish-ial" and "hope to sea you." If the guests are expected to bring swimsuits and towels for water games, make sure to let them know on the invitation.

Decorations

For an indoor party, draping blue streamers across the ceilings and from doorways upon entry to the party makes for a good ocean backdrop. Green can also be included as giant kelp. In the weeks leading up to the party, the birthday child can make underwater-themed crafts that can be hung from the ceiling to create an ocean environment.

Cake

An under-the-sea cake can be the centerpiece of the food table. Make a basic sheet cake and decorate it like an aquarium. Blue frosting for the water, strips of green gummies for kelp and candy rocks can set the scene. Various gummy sea creatures such as fish, sharks and even an octopus can be arranged on the cake.

Activities

Water activities are a must in warm weather, and these can range from wading pools in the backyard to water balloon tosses at increasingly longer distances. Another fun outdoor activity is octopus tag, in which one child is the octopus and other children have to try to run the yard without getting tagged by the octopus. Any children who are tagged become seaweed and must keep one foot planted on the ground as they try to tag kids running past. The game continues until only one child who has not been tagged is left. For indoor activities, party games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey can be adapted by having children pin the tail on a fish instead. Or fill a large bucket with sand and small prizes and let kids take turns digging for treasure to take home as party favors.
