Upscale Restaurants In Toronto Canada

Toronto, Canada, has a wealth of upscale restaurants.

Toronto has a large selection of upscale gourmet restaurants. From French-Canadian cuisine to charcuterie, there are different gourmet options for every day of the week. Diners can find upscale restaurants all over the city, but most of the upscale choices are in Yorkville, a district of posh designer clothing stores and restaurants. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Sassafraz Restaurant

Sassafraz is located right in the heart of Yorkville, an upscale Toronto neighborhood with a variety of different restaurants. The cuisine at Sassafraz is French-inspired Canadian food, taking traditional French favorites and putting a Canadian twist on them. One of the popular dinner choices is tuna carpaccio, made with lemon oil, herb salad and cured tomatoes. Another entree choice is terrine--duck and smoked fois grass with Riesling gelee, dried apricots and toasted brioche. The restaurant attracts many Toronto sports stars and local entertainment figures. The restaurant is busy during weekend brunches and dinners. There is a dress code at Sassafraz.

The Black Hoof

Chef Grant van Gameren, who made a reputation for cooking with cured meats, runs the Black Hoof and specializes in 40 types of charcuterie, a brand of cooking devoted to prepared meats like bacon, ham, terrines and sausages. The Black Hoof serves house favorites, such as horse sausage, duck confit sandwiches, roasted beets and goat cheese.

Vegetarians should look elsewhere for a meal, because most of the menu, aside from the bread and cheese, is built around different meats. The restaurant is a small venue located on Dundas Street. There is no dress code.

Pangaea Restaurant

Pangaea Restaurant, also in the Yorkville area, first opened in 1996. It is run by chef Martin Kouprie, who purchases all his food from local farmers using organic food sources. The menu changes seasonally, based on what produce is available, but some of the favorites from the dinner menu are grilled lamb sausages, mushroom risotto and steamed blue mussels. The restaurant is a popular dining spot throughout the week, but it is especially busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Interested guests should call ahead to guarantee a spot or should arrive before the dinner rush (around 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.). There is a dress code at Pangaea.
