Volcano Science Project Ideas

Learn simulate a volcanic explosion for your next science project.

If you have decided to design a science project based on volcanoes, certain guidelines should be followed. The project will need to explain what a volcano is and demonstrate how it works. Some schools have rules against certain types of demonstrations, so be sure to know your schools policies before getting started.

Paper and Cardboard Volcano Project

You will need the following items: a piece cardboard (9 by12 inches), vial, tape, newspaper, aluminum foil and black spray paint. Using the cardboard as the volcano's base, tape vial in the center with the open end up. Make balls of different sizes with newspaper pieces, then wrap them in tape. Stack these around the vial with largest balls on the bottom using smaller ones as you move up. Wrap newspaper in tin foil and tape to the base. Use a pencil to make a small hole above the vial. Spray paint tin foil black.

Plastic Three Dimensional Volcano

For this project you will need a raised relief map, molasses and a straw. Insert straw into the molasses, keeping your finger over the end to keep it from running out the other end. Pour molasses over the relief map's volcano at the highest point. Take notes on how fast gravity pulls the fluid down and which paths it takes. Compare this data with actual data retained from the last eruption of the volcano indicated on the map. Create a chart or graph to show your findings.

Baking Soda Volcano

Place an empty soda bottle in the center of a baking pan. Mix the following ingredients: 6 cups flour, 2 cups salt, 4 Tbsp cooking oil, and 2 cups water. use this mixture to form a cone shape around the bottle. Pour warm water into the opening of the soda bottle. Red food coloring can be added to water for more visual impact. Now add 6 drops of liquid detergent and 2 Tbsp baking soda to the bottle. Slowly pour vinegar into the bottle and watch your volcano blow.

Salt Volcano

You will need a glass jar or drinking glass, vegetable oil, salt, water and food coloring for this project. Start by pouring 3 in of water, 1/3 cup vegetable oil and 1 drop food coloring into jar. Shake salt over the top of the jar while counting slowly to five. The oil will float on top of the water and absorb the food coloring. By adding salt the oil drops in clumps to the bottom, creating a home-made lava effect.
