The Volvo XC90 is a five-passenger crossover sport utility vehicle powered by a standard V-6 engine or optional V-8. This model is loaded with safety amenities and a Volvo strong suit and is a top safety pick, according to AOL Autos.


Safety Amenities


Offering seating for up to seven passengers, the 2011 Volvo XC90 is powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety equipment includes a blind spot information system designed to avoid lane change accidents and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution for road stability control. This model also includes side impact and side curtain airbags, independent rear multi-link suspension, four wheel disc brakes, traction control and daytime running lights.


Insurance Safety Ratings


The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit agency funded by auto insurers, has given the Volvo XC90 its highest rating for all five of its testing categories. The IIHS testing includes front, side, rollover and rear crash tests and electronic stability control.


Federal Safety Ratings


As tested by the federal government, the Volvo XC90 has received top five-star ratings for frontal driver, frontal passenger, side driver and side rear passenger. For two- and four-wheel-drive rollover testing, the XC90 achieved four-star ratings.
