Take in the scenery in Maui.
Maui is one of the most popular Hawaiian islands. The island, of course, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, which provides many opportunities for recreation. From fishing to scuba diving, snorkeling to swimming, cruising to sailing, the ocean activities available on Maui are numerous.
A List of Options
The Maui Visitors Bureau is one of the best sources of information about the wide variety of ocean activities available on Maui. Go to its website, visitmaui.com, and click on the "Activities" link. Then look at the links under "Water Adventures." In addition to descriptions of some of the activities available, the site also includes links to the various businesses through which people can participate in those activities.
How Adventurous Do You Want to Be?
It is helpful to try to narrow the search for ocean activities. Maui offers ocean activities that will please a wide variety of people, whether they are interested in a relaxing dinner cruise or whale-watching excursion or a physically demanding snorkeling or scuba diving trip. The former activities require only that people want to get out on the ocean and see the sights and hear the sounds, while the latter activities require people to get in the water and swim around on their own. Sometimes, this involves fighting waves and wind. However, scuba divers and snorkelers have access to underwater scenery that is not available to those who stay on the confines of a boat.
Two-in-One
Some ocean activities on Maui give people the chance to see and do multiple things. Some of the snorkeling trips, for example, are as much about seeing the caves and caverns created by the waves as they are about seeing the sea turtles and colorful fish found under the surface of the oceans. And those people who choose to take a fishing charter boat out will target fish species like tuna and marlin but may also have the opportunity to see breaching whales splashing above the surface.
Cost Considerations
The cost of various activities can limit the ability of people to participate in them. While a whale-watching cruise might cost less than $30 for a half of a day, a fishing trip on a charter boat can cost $1,000 for half of a day. Snorkel tours, for example, can cost $150 to $200 for half of a day. But for some activities, there is no need to rent a boat or go on a guided tour. People who want to surf can rent a surfboard for about $25 per day, or get lessons for about $60 for two hours. Those who do not want to spend any money, but want to enjoy the ocean, can go swimming at any number of the beaches on Maui for free.
