Tropical Names Puzzle
The names of the Hawaiian Islands and the cities that dot them present a spelling challenge to non-native spellers. Challenge your party guests with a Hawaiian geography-themed scramble. To prepare this activity, type out the names of Hawaiian islands and cities. Clip apart the letters that make up these island and city names, placing each set in a separate envelope. Prepare two identical sets of envelops to allow for multiple teams to compete in this challenge.
When game time comes, give each team one of the sets of envelopes and encourage them to race through the unscrambling challenge, ripping open the envelopes one at a time and using the contents to spell out Hawaiian location names.
Drink Unscramble Match-up
Many luau hosts opt to offer their guests adult-friendly tropical drinks. Turn your luau cocktail hour into a mental challenge by creating a drink unscramble match-up game. Select an assortment of tropical beverages to present to your guests including margaritas, mai tais and pina coladas.
Type out the names of your selected drinks, clipping apart the letters. Place your drink-name-creating letters in a basket or bowl. Prepare each of the drinks, and lay them out side by side on the table. Present the basket to your guests and challenge them to use the contents to spell out the drink names. Allow all party guests to work together on this challenge, or make it a competitive event by preparing several baskets and dividing guests into teams.
Beach Ball Unscramble
Give your guests a reason to step into the water by preparing a beach ball unscramble. Prior to your event, purchase an assortment of inflatable beach balls. Select a phrase related to your luau theme such as "fun in the sun" or "Hula competition." Write the letters that make up this phrase on your beach balls, placing only one letter on each ball. Create beach balls to represent spaces by drawing an underscore on the balls. Place your lettered balls in the pool. After all party guests have changed into their swimming gear, ask them to jump into the pool, gather the balls and unscramble the spelled out phrase as quickly as possible.
