Movie Themes And 60th Birthday Surprise Party Ideas

Iconic films lend themselves to theme parties.

Movie-themed parties are a novel way to commemorate certain periods in the guest of honor's life. Her 60th birthday is a time to reflect on good times past, and immersing her in landmark movie settings will bring the memories flooding back. Go way back to the epic blockbusters of her childhood, help her relive her happy-go-lucky teen years with a bubblegum flick, or let her be the twenty-something disco queen again. The sets, costumes and soundtracks of iconic films practically create the theme for you. Does this Spark an idea?

"Peter Pan"

As the top-grossing movie of 1953, "Peter Pan" provides the perfect theme party for the honoree who never really grew up. Decorations can vary from pirate ships and treasure to an English nursery. Scatter pixie dust (glitter) over tables and floors, and take pictures of guests battling a fake alligator. Ask guests to come dressed as their favorite character, and keep a Peter Pan hat on hand for the guest of honor---and don't forget to designate a Captain Hook for the evening. Have sing-alongs to the iconic soundtrack, and organize a "treasure hunt" for the birthday gifts.

"Beach Blanket Bingo"

Hang a bright parachute to commemorate the skydiving scene.

Use 1965's hit "Beach Blanket Bingo" to commemorate the honoree's teen years. Hang a parachute from the ceiling to honor the skydiving scene, and lean surfboards against the walls to bring in the beach theme. Use beach chairs for seating, and spread beach blankets around on the ground. Decorate with palm trees, beach balls and sea shells, and serve food on plastic picnicware. Encourage guests to wear bathing suits and Hawaiian shirts, and have a dance-off to the title song. The "Beach Blanket Bingo" theme makes a great pool party, but is also a refreshing wintertime birthday surprise - just be sure to turn up the heat.

"Saturday Night Fever"

A disco ball is a must for a Saturday Night Fever theme party.

"Saturday Night Fever," released in 1977, is the iconic movie of the honoree's young adult years. Decorate the room with colored lights and a disco ball, and leave plenty of room for a dance floor. Serve New York-style pizza and beer (as featured in the movie), and encourage guests to come dressed in their best disco gear. The movie's soundtrack is featured so prominently in the movie itself, it makes sense to play the movie in the background. Guests can quote memorable scenes line-for-line, and everyone can join in the dance scenes. The tricky part is convincing the honoree to wear a white polyester suit without spoiling the surprise.
