Moving To Hawaii From The Mainland

Enjoy a laid-back lifestyle in Hawaii.

Moving across an ocean and especially to the most isolated island chain in the world may be a daunting task, but a little foreknowledge about things such as shipping your personal property can make the challenge a bit less intimidating. When planning a major relocation to Hawaii, it may not be cost-effective to take all of your belongings, and if you have pets, you need to know about the state's regulations.

Moving Pets

Hawaii is a rabies-free state. In an effort to keep it that way, the state has strict regulations about bringing pets to the islands. According to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, a certificate of veterinary inspection is required for all animals arriving in Hawaii and must have been obtained no more than seven days before submitting it to the state.

Also, you will need to complete a form called "Checklist for 5-Day-or-Less Program," which you can obtain online at Hawaii.gov or by calling (808) 483-7151. If your dog or cat meets all of the requirements on the checklist, your pet will be quarantined for only five days once you reach the islands. However, if your pet does not qualify, it will be quarantined for 120 days. You can get answers to any questions you may have by sending an email to rabiesfree@hawaii.gov.

Shipping Personal Property

Take important documents with you in your carry-on luggage when you move to Hawaii. If possible, transport your most valuable and sentimental items this way as well.

Shipping your personal property to Hawaii can be expensive. Ship only the most necessary items first and arrange for other shipments to follow. United Parcel Service shipping rates vary based on weight and size. Contact UPS online or at (800) 742-5877.

Weigh the benefits of shipping most personal belongings, such as furniture, vs. selling them and obtaining replacements in Hawaii. Many properties (whether buying or renting) include all major appliances.

The climate in Hawaii is tropical, with the exception of the Big Island, which has 10 different climate zones. If you are moving from a Northern state such as Minnesota, the clothes you now own may not be suitable for life on the islands. Donate them and buy new ones once you are in Hawaii.

Ship your car and household items such as furniture through companies such as Matson Navigation Co. Rates to ship a car from a California or Seattle port began at about $1,100 as of August 2009. Contact Matson online or at (800) 462-8766.
