Host a baseball-themed sports party.
Throw a sports-themed birthday party for a special athlete or fan complete with a homemade sports ball cake. You can focus on one particular sport as the theme of your party or include a wide variety of sports to satisfy those birthday recipients with a sport for each season. Does this Spark an idea?
Invitations
Prepare your guests for your sports-themed birthday party by sending them tickets to the event. Use a graphic design program on your computer to copy an actual ticket. Include the birthday boy's name, date and time of the party and the party venue on the ticket.
Another option is to cut circles from card stock and decorate one side of the circle to look like a ball while writing the party information on the opposite side. Send the tickets in square envelopes large enough to accommodate them.
Round Sports Ball Cakes
You can decorate any round cake to look like a sports ball with the correct shade of frosting, but a domed cake makes a more realistic looking ball cake. Although special ball shaped pans are available from cake decorating suppliers, a Pyrex or metal mixing bowl achieves similar results.
Bake your cake batter in one well-greased bowl to form a cake that looks like half of a ball or divide the batter between two bowls and glue the two halves together with icing.
Irregularly Shaped Sports Cakes
Instead of trying to carve a football, baseball bat, hockey stick or tennis racket from a large sheet cake, form the cake by hand from crisp rice cereal treats. Prepare the treats as you would normally and shape them with greased hands on a piece of wax paper while the mixture is still warm.
You can cover the no-bake cake with icing or rolled fondant just as you would decorate a baked cake. Consider making a no-bake cake to go along with a traditional cake such as pairing a no-bake baseball bat with a baseball cake.
Pinatas
The round shape of many sports ball simplifies the process of making a sports-themed pinata for your party. Blow up a large balloon to create your pinata and coat the balloon with several layers of paper mache.
A simple recipe for paper mache is to mix 2 cups of flour into 4 cups of warm water. Dredge strips of newspaper through this mixture and apply them directly to the balloon.
You should make the pinata a few days in advance to give it plenty of time to dry. Once the newspaper is dry and hard, paint the pinata to resemble the sports ball of your choice.
