Pool Party Decorating Ideas

Hang plenty of lights for night swimming.

One of the easiest aspects of a pool party to overlook is the decor--you spend so much time thinking about the pool that you forget about what happens outside of the water. If you're looking for a few quick, easy ways to make a splash with your pool party decorations, you're in luck. Setting the stage for a fun, casual afternoon by the poolside is am easy, breezy task. Does this Spark an idea?

Color

Use bold, popping colors throughout your d cor. Summer is a time for bright colors and energetic attitudes, so don't decorate with drab color schemes. Start by decorating your pool area primarily in white, which provides a clean backdrop and a stark contrast for your more colorful decorations. Shades of blue, both light and dark, provide a cool accent that complements the water. Use other colors in both your food and decorations--for example, bowls of fresh strawberries and clear glass bottles of red soda dramatically pop against the clean white table settings.

Aquatic Influence

You may not be on the open ocean, but you're close enough--decorate your poolside area with nautical-themed accents to celebrate the cool summer water. Decorate metal buckets with fish, worms and bubbles cut from construction paper, then fill them with candy or ice. Life preservers make a decorative statement while also keeping everyone safe, and a few vintage fishing poles give the party a dose of antique-chic. Oars, fishing nets and life vests can hang from the ceiling, while tackle boxes can open up to reveal sunscreen, earplugs, goggles and other pool supplies.

Night Swimming

Your party doesn't have to end just because the sun is going down--be prepared to do a little night swimming by decorating the pool area with a variety of lights. Wrap twinkling white Christmas lights around the patio's support beams and your fence to illuminate the area with a soft, romantic glow. Yellow, cream and white candles provide a clean, casual look, so place dozens of them throughout the area. Citronella candles and tiki torches also set a summery mood while keeping nighttime bugs at bay, so burn them liberally in areas where swimmers congregate. Finally, hang large and small paper lanterns from the trees and the ceiling to light up the night.
