Luncheons can be formal occasions or casual affairs. Luncheons can be an intimate affair between a few friends or a full blown event for hundreds of people. Casual Luncheons


Casual luncheon foods can vary depending on the degree of casualness of the event. A very casual luncheon can consist of barbecued hamburgers with condiments, potato chips and potato salad or coleslaw. Serve brownies or ice cream sundaes for dessert. Some events might be considered "semi-formal." These types of luncheons can include croissant sandwiches or meats and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla shell. Also include a fruit salad, a cheese tray and apple crisp for dessert.


Formal Luncheons


Formal luncheons should include a salad, entree and dessert. Consider a seasonal mixed green salad or a salad that mixes leafy green vegetables with fruits and nuts. A main course could include stuffed chicken breasts, salmon or a vegetarian option such as butternut squash lasagna. Offer fresh baked bread along with the meal. Keep the portions small and serve a light dessert such as creme brulee or flan.


Themed Luncheons


Themed luncheons can be either formal or casual. Consider a theme such as Hawaiian or Hollywood or a decade theme such as he 1950s. The foods served at the luncheon should give nod to the theme of the event and stay in keeping with the formal or casual style. For instance, serve tortilla chips, taco salad and flan at a casual Mexican-themed luncheon. However, for a formal luncheon with a Parisian theme, include quiche and crepes.

Don't try new recipes for a luncheon. Test the recipes before the event and tweak them as necessary to meet your taste. Ask guests about any allergies they may have and keep this in mind when planning the menu. Offer alternative foods for people who may have a special diet such as a vegetarian or a diabetic or someone who is on a gluten-free diet. Buffets and potlucks are good solutions for picky eaters or a diverse group of guests as they offer a little something for everyone.
